Worship

image

Worship is the centerpiece of life at First Presbyterian Church. We gather as a family of faith twice each Sunday to hear God’s word read and proclaimed (except during the summer, when only one service is offered at 10:00 am). The early service at 8:30 am is identical in most ways to the later service at 11:00 am except that communion is served weekly during early worship. A printed order of worship given to all who attend includes the elements for worship in addition to announcements and other vital information. Each service is grounded in the Reformed Protestant tradition, meaning our music, prayer and preaching are meant for “the priesthood of all believers,” not just a few. The congregation is comprised of people from all walks of life—children, college students, families and retirees, making for a beautiful blending of generations in which to worship God. Music

Music is an integral part of worship at First Presbyterian Church. With this in mind, we offer a fully graded vocal choir program for four-year-olds through adults. Our choirs are open to anyone wishing to participate.

The Chancel Choir is the foundation of the music ministry leading worship at the 11:00 A. M. service each Sunday. The semi-professional choir is committed to serving Christ through music, trusting God to bless their efforts of service and dedication. In addition, the choir presents an annual Festival of Lessons and Carols service each year with orchestral accompaniment. Participation is a rewarding experience and is open to amateur and professional singers.

The Cherub Choir is for pre-K and K age children and provides the opportunity to enjoy music through singing, rhythm games, and the use of rhythm instruments. The emphasis will be on creating and enjoying music.

The Chapel Choir is for first through third grade children. This choir focuses on matching pitch and basic rhythm skills and educating the children on the role of music in worship.

The Kirk Choir is for fourth through sixth grade children. Members of the Kirk Choir receive valuable training in rhythm and rhythmic movement, matching pitches and learning basic music and singing skills. The greater purpose is to foster an understanding of the role of music in worship. They participate in worship regularly.

Musical Instruments include a 30 rank Casavant pipe organ (1980) and a 5’ 10” Steinway grand piano.

Funerals

The death of a loved one is sometimes unexpected and always painful. During a time of grief and sorrow, pressing questions arise about funeral arrangements, leaving family members and close friends of the deceased with the responsibility of navigating the logistics of a funeral. In order to facilitate this process, the Session of First Presbyterian Church approved a policy handbook in 2009 to help families maneuver the often-complicated details of planning a funeral service. Our pastors, staff and congregation want to assist you in any way possible. Please click on the link below to view the policy. If you have questions or require additional information, contact the church office at 234-1757.
